Race Against Myself

Race Against Myself In 1st grade, there were these 1-sided sheets of simple math problems called “Minute Math”. Some of the strongest memories of my childhood is nose to the paper, pencil poised, ready to race across the page as if those 60 seconds were going to be my last, and then loudly putting my pencil down announcing that I had finished first. In 4th grade, in computer lab I’d sneak glances at neighboring people’s wpm and quietly gloat about how I was faster. 80wpm!!! Throughout middle school, I was a proud reigning champion of the visual speed game SET, constantly ‘challenging’ people, knowing that I would win. But as I moved up in the hierarchy of grades and outgrew the small staircases, my place in the hierarchy of smart people moved down. Other people started finishing earlier than me. Other people had wpm’s over 100. Other people started beating me at SET. Other people were better than me.   By the time I got to MIT, I didn’t have the problem of “was valedictorian and suddenly isn’t the baddest fish in the sea”. I already knew I wasn’t that good, I just wanted to survive. I didn’t look competitive anymore, but it was because I knew I was going to lose if I tried so I didn’t. I didn’t want to lose what little benefit of the doubt left that I was smart. Maybe this would’ve been fine, except that the ‘Other people are better than me’ simply got stronger. From the moment I joined the MIT Class of 2018 Facebook group to see everyone’s charged up, jubilant cheers and introductions, that feeling grew. The tears of relief off my face had barely dried from acceptance and I was already feeling inferior. Feeling behind, again. FIRST Robotics 1st place. Math Competition X that I never made the cut off for. Oh and Math Competition Y that comes after X Wow if I were international I’d never have gotten in. Hobbies I’d never heard of, towns I’d only heard of, and activities I could only dream of â€" I was overwhelmed trying to find my place in all of this, let alone hierarchical place. So I saved myself the trouble and for the past three and a half years, I missed opportunities to grow, to believe in myself, to fail and learn from it because I Truly Believed That I Was Not Good Enough. Didn’t finish that video lecture in 2x speed in half the lecture time? FAILURE. SLOW. DISTRACTABLE. LOW FOCUS. Forgot what I was doing for this code assignment and totally lost? STUPID. INCAPABLE. DEPENDENT. Got a low score on a test that I knew I could’ve done better on? LOSS OF POTENTIAL. DISAPPOINTMENT. BAGGAGE. For the past three. and. a. half. years I have not given myself compassion. With the help of an ADHD diagnosis my sophomore spring, my ADHD MIT therapist Dr.Xiaolu Hsi, my wonderful ADHD friend Zoë Redstone-Rothstein ‘17, and countless friends unconditionally affirming my place here, my last semester at MIT, I understand now what it means to love myself. It looks like giving myself time.   It means that if I need four hours to read this lecture slowly on my own, it means four hours. Not the time that I hoped for, not at the smooth, rapid, pace of comprehension I know at my peak I can process, but instead four hours of hard-earned learning time. It means that if I have to say I can’t go to this event I had said I was going to, I do it, because that doesn’t come before my own stress level and well-being as a priority. And I remember next time to be more mindful of promising time I cannot promise. It means. That if I need help, I go on Piazza (QA class forum) and ask. Anonymously or not-anonymously. The reason people there have always looked so ahead of you is not that they were smarter, but because they just spent more time running into roadblocks and time overcoming them. In fact, 90% of your questions are questions other people had too!!!!!! In my last semester at MIT, I have finally learned to love myself and I have an inner peace that I never had before. It’s what it must feel like to accept and be kind to myself. I accept and understand now that taking time does not reflect a lack of intelligence, perseverance, or problem-solving ability. Its not expecting of myself a constant level of productivity thats also considered abuse. It looks like my planner one year ago looking like this: To this: And my calendar from this: To This: And I know, that I wanted to be faster, smarter, to do all the things that I wanted because X, Y, Z person was why can’t I? Because I’m me and not them and that’s all. Not because I’m not doing A, B, C and I can’t D, E, F. I have my own constraints and that’s all that I have to work with. That’s what accepting myself unconditionally looks like. That’s what love looks like. I don’t try to do the things I want to do and then make myself fit. I learn and understand myself and then prioritize the things I must do and then the things I really really really want to do, then the things I really, really want to do, and then the things I really want to do because I really want to do everything. I love myself all the more for having gone through this journey and brought myself to this place. I love my friends who have patiently pointed out for years that I need to take better care of myself before I run around thinking I’m needed and necessary for all the things. Because I don’t need my value or worth as a person to come from the things I’m doing and by extension, I don’t need my value and worth be lessened because of the things I’m not doing. By all the metrics I’ve fallen short of in the past, this semester I’ve exceeded my expectation of myself over, and over again. I am actually able to enjoy learning again when its not a direct causal indicator of my self worth. I feel less guilty about friendships I can’t keep up with and still acknowledge how important they are to me. I don’t feel like I’m wasting my potential every day because I know that what I’m working on right now is the most important thing that I could be doing and all the other things I could be doing are just things I could be doing if I weren’t me. Accepting myself and my limits has allowed me to achieve more instead of falling short. I can’t expect myself to sprint if I haven’t learned how to walk. Recently I played Typeracer again. I have consistently proved to myself that when I try to type faster, I make more mistakes. There are rounds that I do hit 111wpm. And rounds like this where I’m so preoccupied looking at the people pulling away from me, that I make even more mistakes and get stuck on a period-looking comma. Over and over, I learn that the way I do best is when I focus on myself. When I look the next word I need to type. When I care about what I’m doing because I want to learn it. When I free myself from thinking other people are better and therefore there are other people who are worse. In 1st grade, I read this story called The Tortoise and the Hare. Now as I’m about to finish this race called MIT, I realize it was never a race at all.   When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly. When people see some things as good, other things become  bad. Being and non-being create each other. Difficult and easy support each other. Long and short define each other. High and low depend on each other. Before and after follow each  other. Therefore the Master acts without doing anything and teaches without saying anything. The Value Of Speaking Spanish Essay - 1319 Words

Growing up I never understood the value of speaking Spanish until I integrated myself several years ago. It has been a teacher and a home to me. It is the language of the people that I love and it has taught me that without it I would not be who I am. Beautifully, language comes in many forms. It does not have to be foreign. Language can merely be a dialect, an accent, a code or anything else that conveys meaning. It can even be a creation or a mix of two languages specific to the individuals speaking it. Language is an extension of us and it extends into our personality as well as our identity. The language that parents raise their children with is the language that forges the very identity and personality of a person. It is the building blocks of a person, creating a pre-existing foundation for morals, values and central teachings. It is beautiful to see how language has different interpretations. It can be a different language from half way around the world or it can be a dialect . It can be an accent or a more loosened form of English. It is used every day, becoming a tool for growth and before people know it, it becomes this soul tweaking tool that raises and composes a personality and identity within a culture and family. As these people are with theirclothes, so they are with their habits. They behave carelessly in other matters also. They are slovenly in their dress, living, reading and other ways also. So in this way, dress reflects their character. Besides this, we find people wearing very simple dress. A white ‘kurta’,‘dhoti’, and a white cap on the head and simple ‘chappals’ are all that they dress themselves in. But their clothes are always very neat and clean. Though they do not waste much of their valuable time in dressing, yet they do not use their dress carelessly. Such people show that they are thefollowers of the principle, â€Å"Simple living and high thinking†. They do notbelieve in ostentation. Mostly such people are intellectual. Broadly speaking, the dress of a man helps us to know his character. But atthe same time it may also be added that the dress should not be regarded as the sole index to the character of a man. Many saints and Sadhuscompletely neglect their dress. But it does not mean that they are very low either in their mental or emotional standard. On the contrary, they raise themselves so high from the level of such worldly considerations that dress becomes quite meaningless to them. Barracuda Facts The barracuda (Sphyraenidae spp) is sometimes portrayed as an ocean menace, but does it deserve such a reputation? This common fish found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans as well as the Caribbean and Red seas, has threatening teeth and a habit of approaching swimmers, but its not the danger you might think. The fish has a long, slender body that is tapered at the ends and thicker in the middle. The head is somewhat flattened on top and pointed in front, and the lower jaw projects forward menacingly. Its two dorsal fins are far apart, and its pectoral fins are positioned low on the body. Most species are dark on top, with silver sides and a clear lateral line that extends from the head to the tail on each side. The barracudas caudal fin is slightly forked ​and curved on the trailing edge. Smaller barracuda species may max out at 20 inches in length, but the larger species can achieve a startling 6 feet or longer in size. Is there anything more unnerving than being approached by a fearless fish with a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth? Barracuda have big mouths, with long jaws and a characteristic under-bite. They also have a lot of teeth. In fact, barracuda have two rows of teeth: an outer row of small but sharp teeth for tearing flesh apart, and an inner row of long, dagger-like teeth to firmly grasp its prey. A few of the barracudas teeth point backward, as an extra aid for securing squirming fish. Smaller fish are mercifully swallowed whole, but larger fish are efficiently chopped to pieces in the hungry barracudas jaws. A barracuda can open its mouth wide enough to snatch just about any fish it encounters, from a tiny killifish to a chunky grouper. Image Source/Getty Images Species The name barracuda doesnt apply to one specific fish, but rather an entire family. The Sphyraenidae is the group of fish known collectively as barracuda. The species most people picture when thinking of a barracuda is probably the great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), a commonly encountered fish. But the worlds oceans are full of all kinds of barracuda, including the pickhandle barracuda, the sawtooth barracuda, and the sharpfin barracuda. Some species are named for the area where they are found, like the Guinean barracuda, the Mexican barracuda, the Japanese barracuda, and the European barracuda. Habitat and Range Most species of barracuda live in near-shore habitats, such as seagrass beds, mangroves, and coral reefs. Theyre primarily marine fish, although a few varieties can tolerate brackish water at times. Barracuda inhabit the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, and are also commonly found in the Caribbean and Red seas. Diet Barracuda have a diverse diet, preferring small tunas, mullets, jacks, grunts, groupers, snappers, killifishes, herrings, and anchovies.  They hunt mainly by sight, scanning the water for signs of prey as they swim. Smaller fish are most visible when they reflect light and often look like shiny metal objects in the water. This, unfortunately, can lead to misunderstandings between barracuda and humans in the water. A swimmer or diver with anything reflective is likely to get an aggressive bump from a curious barracuda. The barracuda isnt interested in you, necessarily. It just wants to sample the object that looks like a shiny, silverfish. Still, its a bit unsettling to have a barracuda come barreling toward you, teeth first, so its best to remove anything reflective before getting in the water. Behavior A barracudas body is shaped like a torpedo and made for cutting through the water. This long, lean, and muscular fish is one of the fastest creatures in the sea, capable of swimming up to 35 mph. Barracuda swim almost as fast as the notoriously speedy mako sharks. Barracuda cant maintain top speed for long distances, however. The barracuda is a sprinter, capable of bursts of speed in pursuit of prey. They spend most of their time swimming slow enough to survey for food, and only accelerate when a meal is within reach; they often swim together in small or large schools. Reproduction and Offspring The timing and location of barracuda spawning are not as yet well-documented, but scientists surmise that mating takes place in deeper, offshore waters and probably in spring. Eggs are released by the female and fertilized by the male in open waters, and then are dispersed by currents.   Newly hatched barracuda larvae settle in shallow, vegetated estuaries, and leave the estuary when they have achieved a length of about 2 inches. They then stay in mangrove and seagrass habitats until they are about one year old.   Great barracuda have a lifespan of at least 14 years, and they typically reach sexual maturity at two years (male) and four years (female).   Fotosearch/Getty Images   Barracudas and Humans Because barracuda are fairly common and inhabit the same waters where people swim and dive, the chance of encountering a barracuda is quite high. But despite their proximity to people in the water, barracuda rarely attack or injure humans. Most bites occur when the barracuda mistakes a metallic object for a fish and attempts to snatch it. The barracuda isnt likely to continue biting once it realizes the object in question isnt food. Barracuda attacks are rare and almost never fatal. Those teeth will do some damage to an arm or leg, though, so victims usually require stitches. While smaller barracuda are generally safe to eat, larger barracuda can be ciguatoxic (poisonous to humans) because they consume larger fish with higher toxin loads. At the bottom of the food chain, toxic plankton known as Gambiendiscus toxicus attaches itself to algae on the coral reef. Small, herbivorous fish feed on the algae and consume the toxin, too. Larger, predatory fish prey on the small fish, and accumulate a higher concentration of the toxin in their bodies. Each successive predator accumulates more toxins. Ciguatera food poisoning is unlikely to kill you, but its not an experience youll enjoy. The biotoxins cause gastrointestinal, neurological, and cardiovascular symptoms that persist for weeks or months. Patients report hallucinations, severe muscle and joint pain, skin irritation, and even a reversal of hot and cold sensations. Unfortunately, theres no way to identify a ciguatoxin barracuda, and neither heat nor freezing can kill the fat-soluble toxins in a contaminated fish. Its best to avoid consuming large barracuda. Hamlet and the Oedipal Complex    In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the title character's main, and only flaw, is his delay. This seems to constitute the central part in Hamlet. By the definition of tragedy, there should exist a flaw in the character of the main hero, who is a great personality that is engaged in a struggle that ends catastrophically. Various reasons for Hamlet's delay are given. Important issues like madness, melancholy and cowardice are discussed, but the evidence reveals that he is capable of swift action, we deem him as an intelligent man and can therefore conclude that he is only pretending madness. To regard him simply as suffering from melancholy is not a sufficient explanation as he is eager to avenge the death of his father, but cannot bring himself to take action. It is obvious that the reason for not carrying out the revenge is not due to any moral apprehensions or fear of divine retribution. There is something special about this task that makes it impossible for Hamlet to carry out th e deed. The inability to take action stems from distinctive feelings within Hamlet, his Oedipal Complex. Hamlet has the perfect opportunity to kill Claudius in Act 3 Scene 3, yet he fails to seize it. He fears that killing Claudius will automatically send Claudius to heaven without punishment. Hamlet himself remarks: "And now I'll do't. And so `a goes to heaven; and so I am revenged. That would be scanned: A villain kills my father, and for that I, his sole son do this same villain to heaven." (3.3.74-78). Hamlet may believe he is delaying from fear of sending Claudius to a "heavenly" afterlife; however, there are times when Hamlet could have killed Claudius when he was not at prayer. Claudius is not ... ... he is delaying out of fear is invalid. Hamlet also may have plenty of time to kill Claudius when he is not in prayer, so any interpretation that includes Hamlet's concerns for Claudius' afterlife is also invalid. Langston Hughes’ “Salvation” Essay

Some people may believe that ‘salvation’ comes to those who deserve it. Others may believe that salvation comes to those who seek it. Still, there are those who believe that salvation is not a ‘privilege’ but is rather a free gift for all. But for Langston Hughes, it appears that salvation for him is not what it seems to be. Apparently, Langston projects the image that a child’s innocence may be a way of looking at salvation in such a way that our basic senses and sensibilities are put back to their simplest and uncorrupted state, devoid of fear from non-conformity from dogma and filled with eagerness to experience what is real. Perhaps Langston Hughes is attempting to channel across the message that adulthood or perhaps our ‘matured’ state, so to speak, has dictated so much of what we believe in that we forget that we were once innocent beings eager to absorb what the world was willing to give us. This is the point where I would like to agree with Langston Hughes. In the many events in our lives that shape who we are and what we want—apart from the things that we want to want—our daily experiences have largely contributed to our personality and character. Sometimes an encounter with an atheist will strike your faith and religious beliefs and be put aback into a state of doubt, weighing odds at both ends and figuring out if your faith is strong enough to resist the temptation of atheism. Or perhaps an encounter with a tribesman living in a far-off, desolate forest may change the way you look at life, especially in terms of material possession. Whether or not we have already encountered these things, it can hardly be doubted that our personal experiences shares a large role in shaping our identities as individuals. As we grow, we start to acquire more of these experiences. Not surprisingly, our earlier knowledge is replaced with fresher ones, relieving ourselves of the burden of having to carry the weight of obsolete beliefs as we go on with our lives. This is the point where Langston Hughes may very well agree: we have grown to a point that we can remember all but one—our state of innocence. It does not surprise me at all to see individuals busy with the complexities of life. After all, people change and so are the things we experience. The evolution of humanity, apart from the scientific sense, has paved the way for more of these complexities. And sometimes we are prompted to lie or to deceive ourselves out of innocence in order to blend together with our environment. In order to convince other people, Hughes lied which made others reaffirm their belief in salvation. No doubt the believers would believe all the more in cases where their beliefs are reaffirmed at least by what they see. But sometimes—in fact, many times—what they see is not the one we or others see. In the end, we are confronted with the startling feeling of self-deception after convening and bending to what others believe in. We mourn over our ‘mistakes’ and hope to convince ourselves that all will be well although it simply cannot be the case after our actions have been committed. Salvation is such a broad concept that it simply cannot be confined within the closed spaces of churches and congregations alone. If, indeed, salvation is free for all then why must there be a need to encroach ourselves into religious orders? And for God or Allah’s name, where among these hundreds, if not thousands, of religious dominions are we to find salvation? Langston Hughes’ â€Å"Salvation† embodies these important points and the rest of what has been said here. Maturity betrays us in such a way that our innocence is hindered from allowing us to view the world outside the box detached from whatever it is that ties us to dogma, delusion and self-proclaimed salvation.
